MDF kitchen set. MDF kitchens: plastic options, films, enameled in kitchen design

Modern MDF furniture has gained wide popularity in our life. A good reputation was provided to her by high performance, attractive appearance and affordable price. Today you will decide for yourself which MDF furniture to choose: with wooden or plastic facades.

If we talk about the kitchen, then every housewife wants to see in her “office” all the conditions for creating culinary masterpieces. Of course, you can order kitchen furniture made of expensive and solid natural wood, or you can choose a comfortable and practical kitchen made of MDF with enamel, plastic or film coating.

MDF furniture with enamel coating

MDF enamel kitchens are popular for their bright, fresh design and modern style. Their facade sometimes looks unexpected and original, both in terms of colors and solutions: in one model there are combined colors and even the effect of a chameleon, mother-of-pearl and a gradient transition of colors, perhaps just a glossy finish or matte shine. Enamel painting technologies make it possible to implement all ideas: unlike other painting methods, the surface of an MDF kitchen with enamel is covered with automotive paint in several steps. Like a car, MDF material is primed, after which layers of paint are applied. After complete drying, the surface is varnished and polished to a unique shine. A distinctive feature of MDF kitchens is the ability to model the most incredible facade shapes: rounded, convex and concave, wavy, conveying individuality in any style.

Facade made of MDF covered with PVC film

The budget option for decorating a kitchen from MDF is a plate covered with a PVC film. The technology for manufacturing MDF boards with PVC is simple: the board is laminated under a vacuum press on an adhesive basis. The facade is obtained in multivariant textures and colors: matte and glossy, wood and stone, just plain. The range of colors allows you to choose kitchens with foil for the most sophisticated design of a classic or modern interior.

MDF kitchen with plastic

MDF kitchen covered with plastic is a new trend in interior fashion. Plastic is more expensive than MDF with enamel or PVC film, as it combines all the best characteristics of enamel and film. The plastic kitchen facade is produced by applying plastic to an MDF panel by means of high pressure and high temperatures, with an aluminum profile or a PVC edge. Plastic glued to MDF is a very durable and reliable material with a long service life.

Detachment of plastic from the base is fundamentally impossible, because thanks to the facade manufacturing technology, the material practically “sticks” to the surface of the panel.

Plastic is resistant to fading, temperature and mechanical stress. The disadvantages of plastic are similar to MDF enamel, although to a lesser extent. Fingerprints on the glossy plastic surface are also preserved. Spots are especially noticeable under artificial lighting. The plastic facade can be decorated to look like natural stone, wood, metal, any pattern can be applied to it.

Material for the kitchen: plastic, film or MDF enamel

The name of the abbreviation MDF is deciphered as a fine fraction. The material is obtained by grinding wood. In its production, epoxy resins and phenol are not used, the fibers are glued together with lignin, which is released from the wood when it is heated. Therefore, the main binder component is not of synthetic, but of natural origin. This allows us to evaluate MDF as an environmentally friendly material.

MDF is very durable and resistant to moisture, fungus and microorganisms, which is especially important in the production of kitchen furniture. According to its characteristics, MDF is much better than chipboard.

MDF boards are used as a base; enamel, film and plastic are used to give them a decorative look.

MDF kitchens with enamel coating are unpretentious in operation and environmentally friendly: the enamel used for painting has certificates confirming its reliability. In addition, a painted MDF kitchen does not lose its original color and shape, since the coating material is much denser and less capricious than natural wood. Humidity and smell in the kitchen are the first enemies of any furniture, but MDF with enamel is absolutely resistant to their influence, since the resistant varnish coating does not dry out and reliably protects the stove from an aggressive environment - high temperature, steam and water.

Compared to enamel, the film is more resistant to cleaning compounds, so it can be safely washed with abrasive sponges without fear of damaging the surface.

The film is not afraid of impacts and other mechanical damage, on such a countertop you can safely put a kettle from the stove, drop the pan, accidentally hit it with a sharp object - the coating will not be damaged. In addition, the facade of the kitchen made of MDF film is resistant to abrasion: over time, the coating does not lose its texture and color if it is not constantly exposed to active sunlight.

The facade, where the coating material is a film, also has its drawback - when heated with air or steam, the film can peel off. Often this happens on cabinets under which an oven, electric kettle or hob is installed. Given this feature, you can operate the kitchen with a film coating for a long time.

The facade of the kitchen, finished with MDF with plastic, never fades or deforms. The material is resistant to mechanical stress: on a plastic table, you can cut vegetables without a board, leave hot pots - its appearance will not be affected. Another advantage will be the appearance of the MDF interior: the impeccable gloss attracts the eye and looks advantageous in any kitchen.

Which kitchen is better to choose - MDF enamel, film or plastic

The manufacturer of MDF kitchens warns that the care of this furniture requires care, does not allow the use of acids and abrasives. One unpleasant minus is fingerprints that remain on the furniture upon contact. At the factory, the inside of the MDF kitchen is painted white, which not everyone likes. The decisive factor not in favor of this furniture may be the tendency of enamel to mechanical damage: dropped dishes or a knife carelessly thrown onto the countertop can leave chips and scratches on a beautiful glossy surface. The high cost of an MDF kitchen with enamel is compensated by a beautiful appearance and the ability to choose a color for any kitchen design.

MDF with PVC film is a good imitation of wood and other materials for expensive furniture, and in terms of practicality and affordable price, such a kitchen is in many ways better than an elite wooden one.

And yet, if the budget provides an opportunity to choose between three types of MDF coatings, it is worth stopping at plastic - this material has collected all the advantages of other coatings. In terms of strength, it is compared with tempered glass or aluminum alloy, which also decorate the facade. A significant drawback can only be considered the price of such a kitchen. By the way, the question of which kitchen is better - made of plastic or MDF sounds incorrect, it is better to be interested in what kind of coating to choose a facade for a kitchen from MDF so that the interior remains pristine for a long time.

The design and final price of the future MDF kitchen largely depends on the facades. Therefore, when choosing a new kitchen in the salon, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the doors and only then the frame, filling, fittings, etc.

Buying MDF kitchens is perhaps the most popular option. And the point is not only that the MDF board is more durable and strong compared to the chipboard board, but also that it allows a greater number of decorative solutions. And for design, this property is no less important.

Kitchen MDF enamel

If you want to buy an inexpensive and attractive option, then pay attention to MDF kitchens, which are covered with PVC film - enamel mdf kitchens

A distinctive feature of MDF kitchens is the ability to model the most incredible facade shapes: rounded, convex and concave, wavy, conveying individuality in any style.

MDF kitchens are perhaps the most popular option. And the point is not only that the MDF board is more durable and strong compared to the chipboard board, but also that it allows a greater number of decorative solutions.

And for design, this property is no less important.

MDF production technology

MDF is a board obtained by pressing a fine fraction of wood chips. Raw materials at first glance are no different from the mixture used in the production of chipboard. Pressing conditions matter here.

The production of MDF board is carried out under high pressure and at high temperature. And when heated, wood shavings release a natural binder - lignin. It is he who provides a strong connection of the chips. The production of chipboard includes the addition of phenol-formaldehyde resins to the raw materials. The latter eventually release volatile compounds that are quite harmful to health.

In the photo, the shapes and colors of MDF facades are practically unlimited

The production of MDF excludes this stage, which means that furniture made from it is completely safe.

Types of facades from MDF

The frame and doors of the kitchen cabinets are made of MDF boards. But at the same time, the design can be completely different. The corner kitchen with milled “wood-like” doors and high-tech furniture, where they shine with gloss, are MDF sets, although their appearance is completely different.

In the photo - artistic facades from MDF.

Types of coatings determine the design of the kitchen.

Veneer

This is the most expensive option. The frame and facade are made of MDF boards covered with a thin cut of natural wood - veneer. Since the veneer is obtained from valuable species, the total cost of the kitchen is still quite high. In addition, such material - veneer on MDF board, is supplied in very small quantities.

In some cases, veneer is the only way to make cabinet doors in the desired color. For example, wenge, a tree that is extremely popular due to its range and texture, is not used for a kitchen set. Only veneer based on MDF boards or boards of less valuable wood. In the photo - kitchen furniture, finished with veneer.

Do not be afraid of the word "veneer": such headsets can also look stylish and sophisticated.
  • The advantages of such products- the real natural beauty of wood, the ability to mill the doors and even decorate with carvings. Repair of the product is quite possible, but not with your own hands.
  • Minuses- such a material requires exactly the same care as if both the frame and the facades were made entirely of wood. Radial facades using this technology cannot be obtained.

Acrylic facades

Advantages of the kitchen set:

  • absolute durability of color and pattern, as they are protected by a layer of acrylic glass, completely resistant to UV radiation;
  • impeccable gloss, no other material gives such a shine;
  • furniture, especially if the frame is made of MDF with acrylic panels, is insensitive to dampness, heat, hot splashes, and so on;
  • gloss provides not only shine, but also ease of cleaning;
  • very durable, as confirmed by reviews - 30-40 years.

Cons of this solution:

  • the same gloss is also the reason for the frequency of cleaning: even fingerprints are visible on it;
  • can only be standard, even; neither milled nor radius cabinet doors can be obtained in this way;
  • the cost of products is inferior to veneer, but far exceeds other solutions;
  • Do-it-yourself panel restoration is impossible, it cannot be painted. Here the repair looks like a replacement of the sash.

Acrylic film on MDF

These concepts are quite often confused, although here production is carried out by a completely different method. Acrylic film is a multi-layer paper composite impregnated with absorbents and acrylic resin, glued to the board surface under pressure. The coating is very durable, and also more flexible than acrylic glass. Not only standard, but radius facades are quite possible here. Which, of course, greatly increases the attractiveness of angular and straight models. In the photo - radius facades with acrylic film.

Product advantages:

  • colors - white, pink, black and others do not lose their brightness, since the acrylic film does not fade;
  • gloss is excellent on dark or bright colors, but white or peach can be matte, and even better - pearl. Acrylic film can also imitate wood, but this is rarely seen in practice;
  • The film is resistant to steam, water, hot splashes, etc. and will not flake off over time.

Cons of a kitchen set:

  • if it is possible to make radius facades, then milled facades are not;
  • matte corner kitchens are harder to clean, and gloss will have to be washed more often;
  • do-it-yourself repairs are not made: at home, you cannot re-glue the acrylic film. But you can paint the headset and apply varnish on top.

Laminated panels

The manufacturing method is similar to the previous one, but it is inexpensive. Decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin is glued to the board. The glue polymerizes when heated and the film is firmly fixed. As a rule, it imitates wood, the color is white, blue, red, it is extremely rare, usually if exotic shades of wood are reproduced. In the photo - a corner kitchen "under the tree."

Advantages of a kitchen set made of laminated MDF:

  • quite affordable cost;
  • lamination is possible on flat and milled facades, radius ones are not obtained in this way;
  • good resistance to moisture and high temperature, although inferior to acrylic film.

Cons of laminated MDF kitchen:

  • repair is impossible, the film must be removed if damaged, but you can paint it yourself and varnish it;
  • short service life - usually no more than 10 years;
  • do not use chemically aggressive products or abrasives for cleaning: melamine film is not resistant to mechanical damage.

PVC coating on facades

The cheapest method of decorating MDF and chipboard. The bottom line is to glue the PVC film under pressure. The lower durability of the option is due to the properties of the film itself: it is much further from the characteristics of wood than paper, and the difference in properties eventually leads to delamination of the composite.

The decorative properties of the film are not limited: any color - white, blue, "under the tree", any pattern, any imitation - stone, leather, any surface - matte, lacquered. In the photo - kitchen furniture in an unusual design.

Material advantages:

  • good resistance to abrasion and damage;
  • PVC film is applied to the facade of the kitchen of any configuration - radius, even, milled; standard or the most complex form;
  • form and has very little effect on cost. Here, a corner radius kitchen will require a minimum of costs.

Cons of this option:

  • the film peels off over time, especially in areas where there is high dampness - near the sink, or constant heating - a stove;
  • durability itself is small - 5-6 years;
  • PVC film fades in the sun;
  • there is no repair as such. You can paint yourself, as well as varnish, but for this the film must be removed.

Painted MDF kitchens

Enamel paint is used to paint MDF boards. The main advantage here is the richest decor possibilities: color - white, black, metallic, any brightness, gloss - pearl, matte, glossy, "chameleon", color combination - standard, two-tone, with a transition of shades and so on. Such striking color effects cannot be achieved with any other coating.

In the photo below - the result of a combination of paint and clear varnish.

Advantages of painted MDF;

  • You can paint any panels - milled, radius, even;
  • the coating can be washed from any kind of dirt;
  • this is the only option where do-it-yourself repairs are done without any problems, so as a result of the restoration of the cabinet and the facade of the kitchen cabinet, they look pretty good.

The last property is so valuable that it exceeds all shortcomings:

  • instability to mechanical damage;
  • lower resistance to moisture compared to acrylic coating;
  • high cost - only slightly inferior to veneered MDF.

How to update MDF facades

Panels with acrylic coating or film are not subject to repair. Pasting even with PVC film is carried out at a temperature and pressure that are not available at home. Restoration of the enamel surface will require great care, but you can do it yourself.

It is impossible to drag MDF boards with a new film. Absolutely nothing can be done with the acrylic panel: repair is impossible. You can only order a new sash, there is no way to paint the last one.

But you can update the appearance of the kitchen set. Most often, the external facades are changed, not the frame. The frame is hardly noticeable even in a straight line, even in a corner kitchen. If the frame is white, then there is no need to change: to change the interior, it is enough to choose new colored facades.

All film and enamel coatings can be painted.

  1. At the first stage, the sashes are removed from the hinges. Hinges and other fittings must be removed, especially if the sash is to be painted on both sides. In the photo - the moment of removing the loops.
  2. Enamel is cleaned with a special paint remover. Grinding, especially on milled sashes, will not give a result.
  3. The film is heated with a hairdryer. High temperatures have a bad effect on the material and the film peels off successfully.
  4. The surface of the MDF board is primed. Polyurethane primer is usually used, since it is better to choose paints for coating from the same group.
  5. After drying, a layer of paint can be applied. Usually two coats are required. Only varnish can be used. If enamel is used, a combination of two different shades can give a more original effect - a chameleon. And the combination of paint and clear varnish creates a pearly sheen for white and pastel shades. How to get the chameleon effect when painting can be seen in the next video.
  6. After drying paint varnish is applied necessarily.
  7. Assembling furniture is easy: loops and handles are carefully attached to the doors, and fixed to the second part of the loop in the box.

If it is necessary to paint the frame as well, the entire set will have to be disassembled and assembled: not only the doors, but also the boxes must be removed from the wall, dismantled, painted and varnished. And reassemble.

Kitchens made from MDF are actually the most in demand. Plastic, acrylic, "wood-like", film - all these definitions refer only to the method of finishing, while the base of the furniture is one - MDF board.

Modern kitchen sets are made from a variety of materials. They are subject to general requirements: environmentally friendly, resistant to moisture and heat, and, of course, beautiful.

MDF kitchens are very diverse.

To the fullest extent these parameters correspond to kitchens made of MDF - medium-viscosity fibreboard. Durable and affordable material - one of the most popular in the manufacture of kitchen sets.

Advantages and disadvantages

We offer you a table that examines in detail the various properties of MDF kitchens - both positive and negative. With its help, you will better understand the features of the material and be able to make an informed decision about whether to buy such a kitchen.

A variety of MDF kitchens have a lot of advantages.

The advantages of kitchens with MDF are quite extensive.:

  • The main advantage of MDF kitchen sets is, undoubtedly, the cost. The price for them is much lower than for solid wood kitchens.
  • Wide design possibilities. Most often, MDF is used as a base, finishing with plastic, acrylic, and various types of films on top. This allows you to create bright unique designs. Often MDF headsets imitate natural wood, stone, metal and other materials.
  • Excellent operational properties. High-quality MDF furniture can serve up to 20 years without loss of properties.
  • Ease of care: MFD is not capricious and does not require special detergents. True, it must be taken into account that the coverage may be more demanding.
  • Flexibility. With the help of MDF panels, you can create headsets of a wide variety of shapes.

It is important to carefully choose the kitchen, so as not to be disappointed in the purchase.

However, get ready for the fact that you will have to face a number of disadvantages.:

  • Unscrupulous manufacturers under the guise of MDF can sell headsets made of chipboard- looser and cheaper material.
  • If the manufacturer has saved on the quality and quantity of glue, the headset may crack and dry out.
  • Headsets pasted over with a film quickly fade in direct sunlight.
  • If the ends of the headset are not finished with plastic or aluminum, they can swell in a year due to excessive humidity in the kitchen.
  • Headsets with high-quality exterior finishes, such as those with acrylic panels, can cost you a lot of money.

Thus, it is obvious that MDF kitchens are highly reliable only if they are made by a conscientious manufacturer and meet quality standards.

High-quality MDF is one of the most reliable materials.

Often the question comes up: which is better for the kitchen - MDF or chipboard? It can be answered unambiguously.

MDF kitchens are environmentally friendly and durable, while laminated chipboard is not very suitable for use near stoves and other household appliances. The material is too loose, so it quickly deforms. In addition, it swells when exposed to moisture, and when heated, it can release formaldehyde into the air, toxic substances that are harmful to human health.

We recommend not to save: chipboard is not only worse than MDF, but also more dangerous to health.

Types of MDF kitchens: facade finishing methods

As we already wrote, MDF kitchens are often finished with additional materials. It can be veneer, laminate, plastic, film ... In addition, there are various ways of decorative processing that can give the kitchen a radically new look.

There are many options for MDF kitchens.

There are a huge number of options. We propose to consider each of them in more detail.

The most inexpensive version of the MDF kitchen set - with PVC film facades. Affordable and pretty kitchens look attractive and are very popular. The film can be painted in any color, drawings are applied to it, giving it the appearance of various materials - stone, wood.

High-quality PVC film can reliably imitate wood.

However, it should be noted that such a headset must be carefully trimmed around the edges - install a plastic or aluminum edge. Otherwise, the film will begin to flake off, go bubbles. In addition, it should not be placed in direct sunlight - the coating fades quickly under the influence of bright light.

Wash the film with a soft sponge and non-abrasive detergent to avoid scratches. In addition, make sure that the product does not contain chlorine or alcohol - they have a negative effect on the durability of paints.

The most expensive option for MDF headsets - enameled. A special enamel paint is applied to the facades in several thin layers. This coating is highly resistant to moisture, dirt and even mechanical damage. True, there is one caveat - in no case do not wipe the enameled surfaces with hard sponges - they will leave ugly scratches.

Enameled kitchens are a stylish and modern solution.

Most often, such kitchens are glossy. The matte version will cost you more, because it requires special processing with a special compound. However, it is easier to care for: on a matte finish, dirt is not as noticeable as on a glossy one.

A more affordable replacement for enamelled MDF kitchen facades - installation of acrylic or plastic panels. In this case, you also need to make sure that the edges are covered with aluminum or plastic frames. Otherwise, the panels begin to move away, moisture and dirt accumulate under them. This causes the headset to deform and it quickly goes out of service.

Acrylic panels can look very diverse.

Maintenance of acrylic and plastic panels in MFD kitchens is very simple: just wipe them regularly with a soft cloth. Hard brushes often scratch the finish, but scratches are not difficult to remove with polish.

If you prefer classic or eco-style kitchens, consider veneered MDF kitchens. Modern veneer reliably imitates natural wood, has high aesthetic and operational characteristics. The material is non-toxic when heated and does not emit harmful substances. In addition, it tolerates operation well at temperature extremes and high humidity.

The veneered set looks like a solid kitchen.

Caring for a veneered MDF kitchen is not particularly difficult - just wipe it regularly from dirt. Sometimes there are recommendations to use a polish. However, we do not recommend doing this: polish attracts dust and debris, so cleaning a kitchen treated in this way will be much more difficult.

Sometimes MDF kitchen sets are trimmed laminate. Durable and lightweight, it is well suited for use in the kitchen. You need to take care of it in the same way as for veneer. However, keep in mind that this option is not suitable for radius kitchens. Laminate is not very flexible, so it is used only for straight, L- or U-shaped kitchens.

Laminate is another popular MDF kitchen cladding.

Finishing option is gradually leaving the market MDF facades with paper-resin film. Such facades look very beautiful… Approximately the first six months. Then the coating begins to peel off even with the most gentle care. Their only advantage is their affordable price. Therefore, we do not recommend such headsets for purchase.

Ditch the film in favor of modern materials.

Regardless of which type of finish you choose, contact trusted furniture companies. Unscrupulous manufacturers, trying to save money, often use low-quality materials and consumables. This causes the MDF kitchen to break in the first months of use.

Using non-certified materials can be downright dangerous - they often release toxic substances into the air. Therefore, we recommend that you ask for certificates for each component of your kitchen - this will protect your family and be able to guarantee the high quality of the purchased kitchen.

Decorative finishing of facades

A variety of decorative finishes make the design range of MDF kitchens even wider. We propose to study the techniques that are used to design headsets in the following photo selection.

A wide choice of decor is one of the advantages of MDF kitchens.
Printed MDF set for a modern kitchen.

Pay attention to the little things: beautiful handles can make an MDF set really luxurious, but be uncomfortable to use. In addition, too heavy elements often put too much stress on the MDF. Because of this, the base of the headset cracks and deforms.

Pay attention to details.

As for the shape of the headset, it can be any - straight, radius, g- or p-shaped. MDF takes any form, so be guided by your preference here. However, keep in mind that a straight headset is the most affordable option, while the cost of a radius MDF headset can reach one hundred thousand rubles.

The unusual shape of the headset looks impressive, but it will be quite expensive.

Whichever option you decide on, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the list of our recommendations. They will help you purchase high-quality and durable MDF kitchen:

  • The weak point of any MDF headset is the edges of the facades. Therefore, no matter how much you want to save money, choose kitchens whose edges are finished with aluminum, in extreme cases - with melamine plastic. Otherwise, your headset may quickly deform under the influence of moisture and temperature changes.
  • Since resins are used in the production of MDF kitchens, pay attention to the material safety class.
  • Headsets marked E1 are considered optimal for use in the kitchen. They do not release toxic substances into the air when heated. But furniture marked E2 should not be placed near the stove - they will evaporate formaldehyde.
  • Pay attention to models with adjustable legs. They will allow you to install the kitchen exactly horizontally, which will prevent kitchen utensils from sliding on the countertop. This is especially true for MDF kitchens with film facades - moisture can accumulate under the film, due to which sooner or later the set will begin to deform.
  • Even if the facades are not treated with the most durable material, make sure that the countertop coating is resistant to mechanical damage.
  • Take the time to take care of your headset. Even the simplest materials, if used improperly, quickly fail.

A high-quality MDF kitchen will serve you for many years.

And, of course, do not forget about the main rule - never buy suspiciously cheap MDF headsets and do not order them from unverified companies. When choosing an MDF kitchen, carefully read the reviews - they will tell you where you can buy a reliable and durable kitchen.

How to care

A kitchen made of MDF will serve you for many years only if you take proper care of it. Depending on the type of facade covering and countertop, recommendations may vary slightly. You can read more about each type of finish in the corresponding section of our website.

Proper care is the key to the durability of an MDF kitchen.
  • Use soft, lint-free fabrics. They will not leave streaks on a glossy surface and will not scratch any type of coating.
  • Refuse aggressive detergents: they can change the shade of the facade or countertop. It is best to use dishwashing detergent or plain liquid soap.
  • Try not to use polishes. They attract dust and grease, and it is much more difficult to wash the treated surface than a clean one. The exception is plastic facades, which can be treated with a special polish to hide scratches.
  • Dry the surface immediately after cleaning. If the coating is not airtight, then moisture penetrates under it, and the MDF sheet can swell and the entire kitchen is deformed.

By following these rules, you will ensure the durability of your MDF kitchen, regardless of the type of coating. We hope our tips will help you choose the perfect headset, comfortable and beautiful!
